I use 32.47cm, but anywhere from 20cm to 30cm is considered the normal range in Quake without accel. You lower it to the limit where it is still comfortable, but has precision. Sens should be comfortable to do a dozen in quick succession. Sensitivity Setup for Quake - do rapid (instant) 180 turns. How to TAB out of game - alt enter or windowed mode. Higher FOV advantage - decreased movement speed of enemy models. FOV between 100-110 on 16:9 is good for comfortable playing. On 4:3 you should add 15 to FOV number - it should be 118 to get equal picture as with 103 on 16:9. Quick Connection to servers - write in console bind “x” connect “server-address” – see the server addresses in Servers.įOV Setup. Record ingame stats - seta cg_logXMLStats “1”. Screenshots can be found in q4max/screenshots. JPEG Screenshots in Game - bind “x” “screenshotJpeg”. (~) Easy Console - open console (Alt ctrl Tilda (~)) and type com_allowconsole 1 – console opens with just ~. Without the fix input may feel floaty and inconsistent, due to double smoothing in windows. Mouse issues in game - use MarkC Mouse Fix. Launch game through Steam, otherwise you’ll get “Client unknown to auth” error. You can change the picmip intensity by changing “image_downSizeLimit” (lower - more flat, higher - more detailed).ĭisable picmip: image_downSizeLimit "2048"Īlways start with Q4max - make a shortcut of quake4.exe, and add set fs_game q4max, same can be done on Steam in launch settings. Write this in console if you want to disable textures at all: image_downSizeLimit "5" Seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR" Picmip Seta image_useNormalCompressionLoadDDSForPal "1" If you have troubles with ultra graphics and always get low-res textures, here is the fix (must be added to autoexec.cfg in q4base folder): seta image_downSizeLimit "2048" The new version seems to have improved netcode and textures and is completely free to play online. Wait for the registration to complete to be directed to the Store and install Quake 4.Specify your controls, network and graphics settings if needed.įrom June 2022 you can get Quake 4 for Free from the Microsoft Store: Also you can download Q4max from Downloads tab and manually extract it to your Quake 4 folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake 4). Just start Quake 4 (if you’re using Steam, launch the game through Steam, not from desktop!) and connect to any WwW server (see Servers tab) to download all necessary files including latest Q4max Competition Mod 0.82 and maps (if download fails – repeat). I wouldn't be surprised if doom 3 aged better though.Install and setup Quake 4 Q4Max Competition Mod One thing I didn't like even at the time is how the game looked TOO much like doom 3.Īnd then the 2nd half was balls to the wall, with the game speed turned up, proper arena encounters with scifi weapons gibbing stroggs left and right. I loved the 2 distinct halves the game had - the first half felt almost like a response to all the criticism doom 3 received (doom 3's reception around its release was full of disappointment, its reception definitely went up overtime) with flashlight attached to weapons, more set pieces to break up the flow, more varied levels, faster speed etc. It retained most of the quake 2 feel but with a modern take. It was marketed as a sequel to quake 2 and it was exactly that. Maybe if it shipped with the patched up balance from the get go, things would've been different.īut, the SP portion was very good IMO, and I liked it much more than doom 3 at the time. I feel like quake 4's failed MP is the moment where arena shooters truly slipped away from mainstream attention. The funny thing is that it actually got patched eventually to speed the game up but it was too late. The game pace was very low, rockets especially - it was almost immediately abandoned by the mp community. As a sequel to quake 3, quake 4 was awful.
